JFK Surpasses St. Baldrick's Day Fundraising Goal
The Comsewogue School District came together in a powerful show of unity and generosity during John F. Kennedy Middle School’s 26th annual St. Baldrick’s Day celebration. The event, which featured a lively fundraiser and dance party, brought students and staff together to support the fight against childhood cancer.
Participants took part in the beloved tradition of setting a fundraising goal and pledging to shave their heads if they met it. The District not only reached it $5,000 target but exceeded expectations, raising $6,720 to benefit the St. Baldrick’s Foundation.
Adding to the excitement of the annual tradition, JFK Middle School Assistant Principal James Hilbert volunteered to have his head shaved by the student who raised the most money. This year, Michael Cardarelli collected the most donations with a total of $2,060. The sixth-grade student has been participating in the District’s fundraiser for eight years.
“I feel really bad for the kids with cancer and how much trauma they have to go through, so I try saving money up to help them,” Michael said. “It’s a really nice way to give back to the community.”
Run by band teacher Stephanie Jaklitsch and teacher and Student Council advisor Kristin Surdi, the District launched it’s first St. Baldrick’s Day fundraiser in 2015. The event has taken on a new meaning over the past decade as the District has rallied behind students and community members battling cancer.
“We are incredibly proud of our students and staff for their compassion and commitment to making a difference,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jennifer Quinn. “This event is a testament to the strength of our school community and its dedication to supporting such an important cause. Watching our students step up with such enthusiasm and generosity is truly inspiring.”
The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a leading nonprofit organization dedicated to funding research to find cures for childhood cancers and give survivors long, healthy lives.
The Comsewogue School District continues to uphold its tradition of community engagement and philanthropy through events like St. Baldrick’s Day, making a meaningful impact both locally and beyond.
